<intro>
     Let me begin with a little bit of background.

     I was born in Berkeley, within a fifteen minute walk from the University of California. I've lived my entire life here. My loyalties are with nearly all Bay Area teams ( the lone exception being the Gollden State Warrirors.)

     I have been a Cal Bear fan since the days of Chuck Muncie and Wesley Walker. Although my passion for football and love for Cal wasn't as concrete as it was in other sports, I did go through the motions and maintained a somewhat shaky alliance with the team.

     Over the past decade, or so, I have been proud to say that I've been married to Cal Bear football. The minister of that wedding was probably former coach Steve Mariucci, who made them so attractive that saying "I do" was a mere formality.

     He helped turn the "ugly duckling" into...( you get my drift.)

      I truly love the Bears.

     Perhaps there are too many fish in the sea and I have trouble putting on my blinders when another beauty waltzes in my direction. Every so often a Michigan or West Virginia gets a bit too close and I find myself going astray. I even felt fondness toward Ball State, last season.

     The Bears, under Jeff Tetford have become media darlings and my football wife is being stared at by fans across the country and I'm very proud--not jealous at all. Because, at the end of the day, Cal is mine.

     However, I am a man and weaknesses exist within all men. Sometimes we see our wives not living up to what's expected, even to the point of embarrassment. Then there are those times that we stray because the grass seems greener on the other side.

     In my case, the grass (or artificial turf ) is bluer on the other side.

     That's why, I have to clear my conscience, today. I don't want this to get out of hand, although it may be too late.

     I have committed the sin of football adultery. I have been seeing another team on the side. Yes Cal is my wife...but Boise State is my mistress.

     Boise State? I've never set foot in Idaho..in my life. I had dig up an old Rand-McNally atlas, just to find the damn place.

      Ah, but that beautiful blue field and the excitement they generate on it...absolute bliss!

      The Boise State Broncos are a football lover's dream. They are so much fun to spend Saturdays admiring. In recent years, they've been lurking around on Friday nights, Thursday's, sometime.

     The other day, they and Fresno State racked up well over a half mile in total offensive yards (987, to be exact,) in addition to 507 yards in kick and punt returns. They beat the Bulldogs 51-34 and that was not out of the ordinary for the Broncos.

     They create excitement like no other team in NCAA Football.

     Perhaps I am among many others who feel this way and I'm not going to admit being wrong about it or ashamed of it, either. I just need to clear the air.

     Yes, I know that everyone who spends time with Boise State gets the same excitement. I mean, you know that when you take out the Broncos, there will be fireworks...you will score...repeatedly.

     I'm forced to admit this affair because of possibilities. Both Cal and Boise State are among Top10 teams. The posibility exist that they could play for a National Championship. I really hope so. After all, what man wouldn't want to be a spectator when his wife and mistress go at it for a three hours.

     I am loyal, though. Should Cal and Boise face each other in any Bowl game, I want Cal to prevail. But, it'll be so much fun to watch.

     What I don't want to do is wake up in January and see neither of them in the BCS National Championship Game. I'm still ashamed of myself for the two years that I had to ride with USC in the title game, just out of Pac10 loyalty.

     It was not a comfortable situation to wake up with the wrong Trojan on my nightstand. I do mean helmet, in this case.

     With USC's loss to Washington the other day, Cal can begin conference play with a good feeling about their title chances. At the very least, my wife can bring me Roses in January.

     Sure, I appreciate the recent gifts, my Bears have brought me, but Poinsettias and Emeralds just don't cut it anymore A couple of years ago, Boise State gave me a real thrill--a Fiesta. That is something that Cal has never given me.

     Maybe this is the season, I get to celebrate with a gleaming crystal football. But, make no mistake about it, I'll love my wife forever. Even if I have to "settle" for Roses.

     Until then, my affair is not over. I'll have to work on it.

     ROLL ON, YOU BEARS!!!
</intro>

    <intro>
     We've only completed two weeks of this season but the California Golden Bears appear to have a very potent offense. Tailback Jahvid Best is on quite a roll, as well.

So far, he's scored three touchdowns and has averaged 10.4 yards per carry as the Bears have topped the 50-point plateau in both of their games.

     Best entered this year in the Heisman conversation. Perhaps the top running back in the nation, Best is not likely to walk away with the award at season's end and it's not his fault. For once, bias has nothing to do with my thinking, either.

     I know that the quarterback trio of Florida's Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and Texas' Colt McCoy are heavy favorites for the honor. They are all very deserving of such recognition.

     College football has changed so much over the past twenty years. Much like the NFL, college teams are more inclined to pass 20-30 times a game and use the run more for clock management purposes than anything else.

     So far this decade, only USC's Reggie Bush has rushed his way to the prestigeous award. The other eight winners have all been quarterbacks--Bradford and Tebow included.

     Not only did Bush rush for 1,658 yard, he also racked up 383 yards recieving and had 17 touchdowns. He was truly a one-man scoring machine, during his Heisman Trophy season.

     Best, although sensational will probably fall far short of those numbers. Chances are, he won't run the ball enough times to pad his stats. Cal has far too many weapons to rely on one man to carry the offensive load in the manner of past running backs.

     Bear quarterback Kevin Riley has completed passes to eleven recievers in two games of work. Best has only carried 27 times. For him to win the Heisman, he needs at least 20 carries per game and that won't happen. Thankfully, the reason it won't happen because the Cal offense is just too good.

     Look for Best to sit out a lot of fourth quarters, this year. He may have to carry the load in some close games, but those should be few and far between.

     The Heisman Trophy has become a quarterback's award. It seems fair because the dynamics of football has changed. When guys are dropping back to launch it 30 or more times and have success, they deserve all the praise bestowed upon them.

     The voters don't seem to like repeat winners, so Colt McCoy has to be the early favorite. Bradford is injured and Tebow would have to break all kinds of records to win the award again.

     Best would have to top 200 yards in at least five games in order to get the attention of Heisman voters. On top of that, Cal would have to go undefeated. With USC on the schedule, that's far from guaranteed.

     Best is the biggest part of a sensational team and may have to let personal goals sit on the back burner. The thrashings over Maryland and Eastern Washington are not worth going into detail about, but Best did shine in both. 10.4 per carry is nothing to ignore, no matter how pathetic the opposition.

     Look for Minnesota to put up a fight in the next Cal game, but look for the Bears to have it under control by third quarter's end.

     ROLL ON, YOU BEARS!!!
</intro>

    <intro>
     Bay Area fans...rejoice. Our California Golden Bears have reached the Top 10 in both the AP and USA Today rankings. So why do I Feel so skeptical about our National Championship hopes?

     You could say that like most Cal fans, I'm just waiting for October 3. That's when USC passes through town and, as usual our entire season will hinge on that game's final score.

     It's too bad that the second conference game on our schedule has to determine an entire season's outcome.

     But that's the reality we face here in Berkeley. Without a victory against USC, we become a footnote in this year's college football season. There is no way Cal will make it to the BCS Championship Game without that victory.

     At the same time, Trojan fans are aware that a slip up here will kill their championship aspirations. The powers that be will not extend championship invitations to any team with a blemished record from this conference. Not unless every team in the nation has tasted more than one defeat.

     That is the politics of football, my friends. We are not the SEC. We are not the Big12.

     Because we are the Pac10, we really don't matter. In the grand scheme, our conference has earned very little respect. Our level of significance is like that of the Kansas City Royals in baseball, existing only to remind us how good the New York Yankees are.

     At least the Royals get to challenge the Yankees several times a year on equal footing. The Pac10 isn't afforded that luxury.

     Only UCLA will play both SEC and Big12 teams. The Big 12 won't see any other Pac10 opposition.

     Three SEC teams will face the Pac10, this season. Will Florida be one of those teams? Yeah, right! The Gators know better.

     I give credit to 11th ranked LSU for comong to the West Coast and pulling out a 31-23 win over a hapless Washington Huskies squad that has now won 12 of it's last 60 games.

     The Huskies were winless last season, but held their own against LSU in what was supposed to be a Tigers romp.

     On Saturday, UCLA will travel to take on Tennessee. The Volunteers trounced Western Kentucky 63-7 in their opener, the other day. The Bruins look to make it two cosecutive wins over Tennessee, whom they defeated 27-24 last season.

     On the 19th, Kansas State will represent the Big12 at UCLA in the lone matchup for that conference against the Pac10. I fully expect the Bruins to win both games.

     Later this month, Georgia ( now ranked #21 ) will host Arizona State, who is coming off of a disappointing 2008 season which saw them fall to 5-7. They had made four consecutive bowl appearances before.

     To illustrate the lack of respect given to this conference, look at last week's Boise State win over Oregon. Those two teams came in evenly matched and Boise State has been the focal point of BCS busting for the past few seasons.

     Boise State was ranked 14th and Oregon 18th. True, the Broncos won with relative ease 19-8. Not a blowout by any stretch of the imagination. The end reult saw Boise State pushed up to #12 while Oregon dropped completely out of the Top25 in both the AP and USA Today polls.

     This leaves #3 USC and #10 Cal as the only Pac10 teams in the AP Top25. Oregon State did scratch te USA Today poll, entering at the 24th spot but that still means this conference has been slighted.

     How is it there are five SEC and six Big12 teams in the Top25. Even further insulting is the fact that there are four Top 25 teams from the ACC.

     That's freaking absurd. It's a conference that should have their BCS membership card revoked. Thankfully, none of them are in the Top 10, but still...It's the ACC! Miami (20,)North Carolina (19,) Georgia Tech (15) and Virginia Tech (14) are ranked?

     The Miami Hurricanes had nine unranked teams recieving more votes than they had going into last weekend. They pull off an upset over Florida State and are rewarded with the 20th spot in the country? Who did they have to pay and how much?

      And North Carolina's win over Citadel should be viewed as meaningless. Just as Georgia Tech's defeat of Jacksonville State. ACC schools should get no bonus points for these cupcake Division IAA victories. But the Tar Heels actually moved up two spot for their win over the Citadel.

      Not to completely disrespect the ACC, but Cal delivered a thrashing to Maryland. The Bears began benching starters right after halftime. South Carolina dumped N.C. State 7-3 and Baylor toppled Wake Forrest 24-21.

     As if those showings weren't poor enough for the conference, Virginia and Duke gave us proof of how pathetic that conference truly is. Virginia got waxed by William and Mary 26-14 and Duke got drilled by Richmond 24-16.

     When teams in your conference start bending over to take it from Division IAA schools, it's time to re-evaluate your level of talent.

     I can state boldly, with a guarantee that the Cal Bears will beat the hell out of Eastern Washington next week. Washington will rip Idaho and Arizona will dump Northern Arizona.

     This is the nation's best conference and when USC plays against Ohio State, Pac10 superiority will be on full display. I want the Trojans to lose that game, but it's likely that won't happen. The Trojans are that damn good. USC's showdown game will be against our California Golden Bears. Although every team in this conference will be gunning for them, USC fears none of them.

     Cal has a tough challenge ahead of them. UCLA, Arizona State and Oregon will be tough, too. Even Stanford is much improved. I wouldn't be surprised if six teams earn bowl bids from this conference.

     Until then, I'm going to watch all the college football I can handle.

     Now, let's see...What channel does William and Mary come on?

</intro>
